Review: If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

How is it possible that I haven’t yet reviewed If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff? I love this clever little picture book. (I wonder if this has something to do with my childhood mouse fixation?) In this mousy tale, events fall like dominoes in an entertaining string of cause and effect. (After the mouse draws a picture he wants to put it on the fridge. So, he’ll need some scotch tape…) The best part being that those events come full circle. Also, how can you not love the happy little mouse in his bib overalls? Actually, all of the illustrations in this book are just plain cute. I do feel sort of bad for the kid who offered the mouse a cookie in the first place. He ends up having to dash about tidying up after his new little friend. If you have not yet read this tale of an energetic mouse (can it be possible?) you have got to give it a try. Just don’t go offering cookies to any mice, unless you have some milk on hand.

This is a great book. It has soul, it rhymes, it patterns, it rolls the world like a cookie. For pure joy, it is great for thinking and talking with your child, a library reading circle.
a-la if you give a child a story…he will want it read…if you read a child a story…he will want to sit with you….
High marks all around for my vote.

Marye, I totally agree with you. I love the pattern in this book. What better way to learn about cause and effect?

  5. Tiffany Says:

Is this written by the same person that wrote “If You Give a Pig a Pancake?”

  6. Elisa Says:

Yes. And “If you give a Moose a Muffin.”
