Booking Through Thursday - BTT Archives

by

I’m actually on vacation at the moment and am posting this ahead of time. (I love technology.) Because I definitely won’t be able to get online for posting today (I almost typed ‘on Thursday’) I figured I would dig into the Booking Through Thursday archives to find some good questions to answer.

I’ve decided to go with the ones closest to my birthday. Today’s prompt comes from August 11th, 2005.

“Roger Zelazny’s Amber series, J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings, David Eddings’ Belgariad, and Stephen R. Donaldson’s Thomas Covenant trilogies, are all classic examples of fantasy. None of them are books either of my parents would ever consider reading. I’ve devoured them all… And more.

1. Do you like to read fantasy?
2. What’s your favorite (or least favorite if you don’t like the genre) thing about reading fantasy?
3. Do you prefer regular people placed in alternate realities, like the Thomas Covenant stories and the Amber books, or do you prefer the whole world to come from the author’s imagination? Or something else?
4. Do you have a favorite author or theme that you go back to again and again?”

Yes, I love reading fantasy. There is something that draws me to reading fantasy created entirely from the author’s mind. Perhaps because it’s personal when the entire world - the governing systems, culture, etc - have been created from the author’s mind. The author’s soul is really in there.

I have my favourites like Eddings, Douglas, Anne McCaffrey, etc (I’ll probably be snubbed a bit for a couple of those…) because they introduced me to the genre when I was younger, but I’ll try nearly anything once…

Fantasy is REALLY hard for me. All those new words and concepts. A fantasy movie I like and I want to read and enjoy the books but I rarely do.

  2. JM Says:

I’m curious to know what authors you have been reading. Fantasy doesn’t have to be overwhelming at all, but it can be if you start with some authors vs. others.
