Book Review: Santa Mouse

My copy of Santa Mouse by Michael Brown has been through a few different owners in my family. My cousin Jim’s name resides in red ink on the title page, while my sister and I share the end paper. I have loved this book for quite some time. Bearing in mind my childhood fascination with mice, perhaps that isn’t too surprising. (I spent a great deal of 2nd grade writing different “Mice are Nice” poems.) Santa Mouse is a story told in rhyme about a mouse who lives all alone. He doesn’t even have a name! The poetry does feel a bit dated at this point, but I don’t care. It really just goes with the story. The illustrations are simply adorable. The cover should give you a good idea of what I am talking about. Every Christmas I think about this book. It’s one of the things that I equate with the season. Give it a try. Perhaps reading Santa Mouse will become a yearly ritual for your family too.

I own a 1970 copy of the sequel, called “Santa Mouse, Where Are You?” I recently read it at storytime.
