Book Review: Moments of Clarity by Michele Cameron
Sasha Diamond, fresh out of a relationship with a cheating boyfriend, is ready to give up on love when she meets Sexton, an NBA star. Although she is immediately attracted to the handsome athlete, she is haunted by her doubts about men… doubts that are reinforced when her best friend, Tiara, finds out that her own husband has been frequenting prostitutes. Sexton persists, eventually wearing down Sasha’s resistance, but then she’s confronted with seemingly incontrovertible evidence that he’s betrayed her. Now Sasha must choose between Trusting Sexton or giving him up for good.
When I started reading Moments of Clarity, I was hungry for a women’s fiction novel to the ‘t’ of the stereotype. I wanted relationships, friendships and life featuring around women. In that way, this book definitely delivered. Moments of Clarity starts off hot and doesn’t let up all the way through.
I do feel this book could have been better, though.
Michele Cameron, in my opinion, comes off as a ‘new’ author with this book. It shows through her writing that she is a little unsure of her characters and doesn’t give them a lot of headway. A few times in the book, I felt distinctly that Cameron was thinking, “it would be cool/interesting/funny if Sasha did that” instead of letting Sasha come through fully.
For example, it’s quite funny to think of a woman throwing up on the man she has just caught cheating, but only a few people would be so sensitive and unable to hold the nausea down. But it happened anyway and felt a bit forced. That’s not to say I wasn’t amused about it happening, but I think I would have enjoyed a more natural to the character action more.
No insult intended to the editor, but I think all the other nitpicks I have – like Cameron’s habit of saying “obvious” – could have been cleared up with one more thorough edit. There is even a continuity error that had me reading one chapter over again because I felt confused.
If you don’t mind overlooking the nitpicks I stated above, then you’ll probably still enjoy this book. I read it all the way through to the end and quite enjoyed it.
