Book Review: Cooking to Hook Up

Describing Cooking to Hook Up: The Bachelor’s Date-Night Cookbook by Ann Marie Michaels and Drew Campbell is a bit like trying to explain Quantum Leap to someone that has never seen it. The closest I ever got to that was the popular “fun to watch, difficult to explain.” Cooking to Hook Up is a cookbook and it’s also the soup to nuts guide to “getting the girl.” (See what I mean?) Say that you know a girl that just may be “the one,” but you are not sure what to do to impress her. Well, if she falls into one of the handy categories provided by the authors (The Girl Next Door, The Party Girl, The Athletic Girl, The Academic Girl, The Progressive Girl, The Indie Girl, The Granola Girl, The Career Girl, The Uptown Girl, or The Gourmet Girl) or is some sort of hybrid, you may just have it made. Seriously. The authors provide very thorough instructions with the assumption that the way to a woman’s heart is through her stomache. Yes, it helps to actually know the girl in question. That way, you can better judge which of the five meals to prepare. Now, I’ve read this book cover to cover, and I am here to tell you that if anyone had offered up any of the five “Academic Girl” (that’s me) events to me (yes, before I got married)… Let’s just say that it would have worked. The “Academic Girl” section even comes with a bibliography, for goodness sakes.

Not sure what kind of “girl” you have your sights on? Tips on how to figure that out are provided for you. Not sure how to prep your place for the dinner? They’ve got you covered. Limited cooking ability? No sweat. The instructons are step-by-step and easy. The recipes ranges from “easy” to “hard.” Care to guess what the level is for “The Gourmet Girl” ones? Yes, for those, you had better already know how to cook. Ladies? Look out. Ann Marie Michaels and Drew Campbell are on to something. Now, if only I could talk my husband into cooking “Shakespeare on a Plate: A First Quarto Sampler”…

  1. Keith Says:

Does using a book like this to get a woman make you thoughtful or calculating? It seems to be one of theweird areas, where if the girl is aware of what you are doing, you seem gimmicky, although I suspect that you wouldn’t reveal your secret :)

  2. Lola David Says:

Oh, but calculating sexy to some women! ;) But, it should have a panache and flair…not gimmicky, I agree.

  3. Elisa Says:

To pull off any of the meals requires a great deal of effort. Most people simply won’t be willing to spend that much time and effort. So, Keith, I’m thinking both. :) Y’all need to look at the book to see what I mean.
